Mine, along with a majority of people in our class, want to do something in the sports industry when we all graduate and start off on our own. Most of us also know this will be close to impossible. No one will ever reach the top right off the bat, that’s like hitting a baseball and automatically thinking it will be a home run. I know I want to do something involved with sports and broadcasting. Before, I used to always say I would be the next Erin Andrews, but a little less promiscuous. I wish we had a sideliners job here for our sports show, because unfortunately I have only been able to work behind the camera, on the sidelines. Erin Andrews graduated from the University of Florida with a BA degree in Telecommunications. After graduating, she worked for many companies in Florida. She started working for Fox Sports Florida as a reporter, then for Tampa Bay Lightening as a reporter for the Sunshine Network, and then later covered the Braves, Thrashers, and Hawks all based out of Atlanta for the Turner South Network. Now, she is a sideline reporter for ESPN. She worked the sidelines for ESPN College Football Saturday Primetime as well as for the Big Ten college basketball games. Even though she is not doing professional sports yet, what she does is very exciting. Right now, she is making around $200,000. Good communication skills are needed for this job, obviously. As well as knowing the history of sports and sports teams. She needs to be able to shoot out question when interviewing the players before, during, and after the games.

Today i helped john tape highlights for his package at the volleyball game. There i learned a lot about what makes a good package, and how long a package should be. I got to the gym at 1 to help set up, and didn't leave until around 3:45. That was probably the longest volleyball ever, it went to 5 sets and it was close the entire time. so i guess 2 and 3/4 hours?

FINAL
I have learned the most in news media practicum then I have in any other class this year. Going in, I had no experience with anything broadcast related. I had never even been in a studio. I have always wanted to be a sports broadcaster like Erin Andrews, but without all the “scandals”. I felt very intimidated knowing I was probably the least experienced in the class. I was instantly drawn to the sports show for obvious reason, and was surprised when John said they had never had so much help in the history of the show. Going to the meetings is a good way to find out what sports are going on for that week, which ones need to be shot, who is working at those shoots, and also how many people they need there. I have been able to help out with one of the volleyball games. At that game, I was asked to start off by taking notes. I had to document if someone made a good shot, if someone blocked the shot, and if someone aced a shot. Not only did I have to pay close attention to the game’s shots, but I also had to know who made that shot, whether it was our team or the others, and also what time on the tap it happened at. Filming allowed me to be in charge of what the highlights from the second half would be. I was able to control what shots were recorded, and hopefully not miss anything. I also learned when to take a group shot, when to zoom in and out, when to take a shot of the coaches, and when to take a shot of the scoreboard. While I was doing all of this I had to yell out the time so the note taker could write it down, and write what I took a shot of. I never taped a soccer game. In the winter I taped basketball, which was more exciting than volleyball to tape since it is faster paced and entertaining. Taking notes was more difficult for basketball though since it is so fast paced. I like taping more than taking notes. It makes me feel important. For the actual show tapings, I was able to learn how to use the teleprompter, learn about switching cameras to add affect during an interview, how many takes it takes to get the show exactly how they want it, and also I learned how to be in front of a camera. I have also become more familiar with the editing and cutting that needs to be done to the video to make it into a package. I am very pleased with everything I have learned in news media so far. I still have no intentions of changing my major, and I am looking forward to seeing what new things I will learn next year in news media and the other classes like news reporting and mass media I will be taking. I have learned to start my hours earlier, and to also get more involved from the start.

MIDTERM for second semester
This semester has been flying by. Towards the end of last semester, I learned how to tape basketball games. I have continued to tape basketball games this semester as well. I have learned to follow the ball and when to zoom in onto the scoreboard. I have also learned to zoom in on the person who scored the point after they scored it. Team huddles are also important to capture. While taping, I have to say the time at which the play happened so the recorder knows what to write down on the paper. I have also been involved with the Southern News show, which has been very informing. I have learned I am not very good at writing stories, but think I am getting better. I have also been able to watch how Colleen and John play off each other being co-anchors. Colleen is really patient and she knows a lot. She will help you with anything you have problems with or questions about. I have learned how to work the cameras and also how to do the audio for the shows. When doing the audio, I had to watch the lights to make sure they stayed within a certain area and did not exceed the highest yellow lights. I sat with the headphones on my ears while Colleen and John conversed back and forth about the news for that week. While working the camera, I learned how to white balance the cameras, of the zoom in and out, how zoomed in the cameras should be on a person, and about a one shot and a two shot. I worked both the one shot one day and a two shot the other. While working the one shot, I had to wave my hand so colleen knew what camera to look at when she was talking. I worked the two shot for John while he taped his sports show. He was interviewing someone from the lacrosse team and during this shoot I didn’t not need to wave. Last night I helped Jordan tape the baseball game for the first time. Baseball games are very different from basketball games to tape. In baseball games, you have to make sure the pitcher and the batter are in the shot at the same time. One a ball is hit, you follow the ball for a little and then zoom onto first base. Since baseball games are very slow, we put the tape on and off of standby a lot to make sure we would have enough tape to capture the entire game. Tori and I moved the camera during the baseball game to the bleachers behind our dugout. From there we were able to get footage without having a fence in our way. Though the wide shot was extremely wide from our angle, it was interesting to see how changing your location can have the biggest change in angles and make it seem like you are watching a completely different game. I can’t wait to learn more!
